As the weather starts to cool, you might be spending more time these days thinking about what to watch on Netflix than planning your next nature outing — but the truth is, there really is no better time of year to get out there and enjoy a good old fashioned fall hike. So what are you waiting for? Get out there while the fall colours are still on the trees and enjoy an amazing hike at one of our favourite nature destinations this weekend!
Beachpoint Promenade
Although not a very long hike, the trail at Beachpoint Promenade really is something special. Located on a long peninsula, you can enjoy beautiful views of Frenchman’s Bay on one side and Lake Ontario on the other. Park your car at Rotary Frenchman’s Bay West Park to extend the length of your walk!
Rouge Park — Vista Trail
With over 12,000 acres of pristine parkland to explore, it should come as no surprise that Rouge Park has more than one exceptional trail that you can explore. Our first pick is the Vista Trail. Running along the top of a series of bluffs that overlook the Little Rouge Creek and Rouge River Valleys, you can enjoy spectacular views on this 1.5 km, easily accessible trail. You can find the Vista Trail entrance at the roadway beside 1749 Meadowvale Road.
Rouge Park — Mast Trail
Our second pick at Rouge Park is the 2.2 km Mast Trail. Take a trip through history as you walk down this 200 year old logging route. Prepare for a moderately challenging hike across a steep “hog’s back” ridge. We promise it is worth the effort! Access the Mast Trail from the Glen Rouge Campground area at 7450 Kingston Road.
Altona Forest Trail
Accessible from Altona Road at Pine Grove Ave., the Altona Forest Trail is a beautiful 3.4 km journey through an “environmentally significant” forest. The forest is known for its diverse vegetation — including several regionally and provincially rare plant species. Keep an eye out for the migrating birds that use this forest as a refuge on their journeys south for the winter as you enjoy the fresh air and peaceful atmosphere of this exceptional hiking trail.
